For the Love of Language
Let me first start by saying that I consider Bengali, or Bangla, to be my mother-tongue. Even though I think in English.
But the above is totally a result of my environment. Born in the States, I was exposed to two languages; English outside the house and Bangla, inside. My mother, so that I would be in touch with my mother-tongue and also so that I could write letters to my grandparents in Bangla, began to teach me the script at home...during weekends and holidays.
And then, during my pre-teen years, we moved to India. And not to West Bengal, but down south. Bangalore, to be exact. And I was exposed to two new languages...French and Hindi. Funnily enough, I never needed to learn Kannada. And so, Ma stopped teaching me how to read and write in Bangla. But, now I wanted to desperately learn...so that I could write letters to my Baba who was still working abroad.
Here's the thing, I can't help but wonder if my personality is a huge part of why I love Bangla so much... Can that have anything to do with your love for a language? Your willingness to learn it? After all, lookit my brother and me...
We were brough up in the same environment, but I am the totally arty type, whereas my brother is the sporty type. I love Bangla culture, music and movies. I feel bereft that my literate Bangla isn't so fluent, because a vast and rich source of literature is closed to me...and for a book-worm like moi, that's a huge loss. My conversational Bangla is pretty darned good, if I do say so myself; my brother's is passable, at best. But having said that, I can't exactly enter into a political debate in my mother-tongue either. Why? Because, as I said right in the beginning, I think in English.
English has been my primary language throughout my growing up years. I read books round the clock in it. I sang songs in it. I conversed in it, dreamed in it, fought in it, wrote poetry in it.
And yet, at home, the environment was typically Bengali and I enbraced that too. So much so, that I knew I wanted to marry a Bengali boy...and I did.
And look at me now. An American-Bangalorean-Bengali living in Kolkata and bring up two boys, aged six and three.
My Elder One has been learning Bangla for two years now. He is fluent in his mother-tongue, as well as English, because I spoke to him in both right from the moment we met, and Hindi, as a result of his environment. Now the younger one, well, up until a year ago, it was primarily Bangla for him since he was with an ayah a lot. And it used to worry me, whether he would ever be up to speed in English...and I balmed myself. But I needn't have worried. The English and Hindi have kicked in and he's as fluent in both as any three-year-old can possibly be.
Despite knowing how to read and write Bangla, I prefer my mother teaching the EO Bangla and helping him with his homework. After all, she knows the rules of grammer; she can answer the why's and the why-not's; demonstrate the how-to's and correct the how-not-to's with confidence and without thinking twice. Trying to teach my son Bangla only brought my turmoil and confusion to my mind about the why's and the how-come's.
For example, do we really need three letters to denote 'sh' in our language? We don't have a 's' sound, which is why most Bengalis wear "shoks on their feet". We don't have a 'z', and therefore we watch the 'newjj' and read 'newjjpapers', sometimes while sitting in the 'joo'. Many letters are redundant, and grammer is turning into a joke.
However, I really want my boys to learn the language. Just in case one of them turns out to be a book-lover like me, I would love for him to be able to pick up a Tagorean classic or a Sunil Gangopadhyay masterpiece or a Satyajit Ray "Feluda" mystery or an anthology of Jibanananda Das poetry or even a "Handa-Bhonda" comic.
The list is endless. And it's there. And I want my sons to know that and take advantage of it.

Five Small Things About a Big, BIG Love (a.k.a Around the World in 80 Clicks)
I have been tagged by the sunny Sue and the joyful Goofy Mamma to do this beautiful tag. Thanks guys! When I saw it doing the rounds I kept thinking to myself, impatiently like a child, "Mera number kab ayegaa?"
The tag is: 5 things that you love about being a mom. Next, find someone to link to and tag - someone from your own country, if you like, but definitely someone from another country (let them know that you've tagged them!) - and link back here and HBM and leave a comment.
Now I know some of the things that I feel and will write over here may sound like I'm parroting others' feelings about this blissful state of being, but that's just the thing about motherhood, isn't it? The sense of universality that it encompasses. In fact, if you sit back to think about it, it's one of the more major factors that have brought us together and made us bond. Hell, we even have a community all our own -- 'Mommy Bloggers.' I am so proud to be a part of this sorority. It's an honour, a priveledge and a pleasure.
You all know that I love being a mom. I harp on and on about it enough here ;)
Motherhood has totally and absolutely changed me. In good ways and yes, bad as well (but I won't dwell on that here). I feel as if I was put on this Earth to give birth to and mother these two little bundles of neverending joy and mischief that I've been so incredibly blessed with. I still do have dreams of my own, but I don't mind putting them on hold while I delight in the company of my children. My children. My sons. My boys. I am still overwhelmed whenever I say these phrases, whether out loud or to myself. So much so, that I actually stop and repeat it to myself a couple of times in my head just so that I can savour the beauty, wonder and bliss that these words fill me with...my children, my sons, my boys.
But having said that, am I a great mom? No, no, hell no! And when they grow up, I'm sure my boys will tell you the same. But I am a mom. Irrevocably so. Do I love being a mom every single second of the day? I'll honestly say "No", because motherhood comes with its fair bit of trials, tribulations and frustrations. But then again, those are only momentary. At the end of the day, I love being a mom every single day. And that's the truth too.
And here are my top five reasons for revelling in motherhood:
1) The act of creation. I am overawed about how I helped make these two little people and that they lived inside me for nine months each. For nine months they were nourished exclusively by me, grew in the coccoon that I provided, were comforted by my heartbeat and had their lives intimately intertwined with mine. The thought still fills me with absolute wonderment.
2) Linked to the above is that they have brought me closer to God. I don’t pray ritually everyday. I don’t go to the pooja room everyday. But I have a closer relationship with God today, than I did before motherhood. I just need to look into their eyes or hear them laugh to bring me closer to Those Above and feel grateful and thankful. I also feel anchored, which is how I pray my boys feel towards me.
3) I have learnt to see the world a-new through their eyes. A bird’s feather, a crawling ant, the setting sun look; everything seems fresher, brighter and newer when you look at them through the eyes of a child.
4) I have rediscovered the world of books. And music. Old favourites have made their presence felt in my life again, and I am not going to let them get away this time. Not just that, but my children have also helped reignite the flames of creativity. I was going through such a bad dry spell where writing was concerned. I thought my pools of imagination had dried up; that I’d lost vision and direction. But motherhood inspires me on a daily basis and in doing so it has brought me back to life.
5) Motherhood makes me want to be the best that I can possibly be. Not just as a mother, but as a woman, as a person – as me. I try to teach by example. I use the ‘magic words’ more often now, than I did in my entire life. I try to reach for the stars…I do fail, but it makes me try harder. Twenty years down the line, I want to be able to look them in the eye and say, “You know, I gave it my all and I’ve done the best I could.” And hopefully, they won’t fault me for that.
And now, I tag:

Preeti Sharma (Mumbai; not really a ‘mommy blogger’, but a mommy and a blogger, so…)

My First Born
So, I thought I'd do a tag. Actually, I've already done it on FB, so this is just a copy paste with edits, but since my Namesake as well as dear friend Monika,Ansh have both tagged me...I thought, why not? This is for you, my gal pals! The FB one has all the snaps though... ;p
Also, I think it made sense to put this here since the EO is all flushed and feverish and making me all weepy...it'll make me feel better. So my darling EO, this is for you too!!
1. WAS YOUR FIRST PREGNANCY PLANNED?
Oh yes.
2. WERE YOU MARRIED AT THE TIME?
Like, really?? Oh alright…oh yes!
3. WHAT WERE YOUR REACTIONS?
Thrilled to pieces and scared to bits.
4. WAS ABORTION AN OPTION FOR YOU?
Never.
5. HOW OLD WERE YOU?
Aww…do I really have to? Ok, 27.
6. HOW DID YOU FIND OUT YOU WERE PREGNANT?

7. WHO DID YOU TELL FIRST?
The husband…of course! Then the torrents of phone calls started.
8. DUE DATE?
17th September 2003
9. DID YOU HAVE MORNING SICKNESS?
Na re, na re. But that smugness was zapped right out of me the second time round!
10. WHAT DID YOU CRAVE?
Burgers! And brownies!
11. WHO/WHAT IRRITATED YOU THE MOST?
The husband. He wasn’t living upto my expectations of doting-pampering-husband-about-to-be-father at all! Sob!
12. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CHILD'S SEX?
Boy
13. DID YOU WISH YOU HAD THE OPPOSITE SEX OF WHAT YOU WERE GETTING?
I wanted a girl, but in my heart of hearts, I knew it was a boy. However, I had a list of lovely names for girls picked out...with just a few afterthoughts for boys thrown in! It was my Ma-Janoni's story in reverse!q
14. HOW MANY POUNDS DID YOU GAIN THROUGHOUT THE PREGNANCY?Aww…do I really have to? Ok, 14 kgs…you want pounds, you do the math!
15. DID YOU HAVE A BABY SHOWER?
In Bengali we call it a ‘shaad’…and I had two, one from mum and another from mum-in-law. Plus countless others from loving friends and relatives!

Sciatica pain due to which I quit my job earlier than I was planning to. Plus, a terrible pneumonic patch in the lungs…and this was when I still didn’t know that I had actually conceived and had to take really strong doses of medication...that was scary, because I took the preg test while I was sick (intuition, late periods...) and when the test came back positive I got scared thinking about the medication. The doc changed them immediately! Plus flashes of rage and depression. Here's one incident...in the middle of an argument with the MIM, I broke a glass table...yup, I just tipped it over ;) Don't worry, that was the only 'major' incident!

23. DID YOU TAKE MEDICINE TO EASE THE PAIN?

And the Award Goes to...
It's pouring awards and felicitations and I guess the time for Oscar worthy speeches has come upon us once again!
This most amazing award was given to me by the amazing Goofy Mumma and according to her friend Shalom from Red Moonrise, this award acknowledges "the values that every blogger shows in his/her effort to transmit cultural, ethical, literary and personal values every day."Wow GM! Me? Really?!? Thank you so much! I don't know what to say, except that it means so, SOOO much to me that you feel this way about my blog. And that in itself, is more than any award!
And my awardees are the Mad Momma, Bohemian Rhapsody, IndieQuill, Orange Jammies and Sunny Days . I truly believe they embody the spirit of this award. Pass on the torch my incredibly wise friends.

My grateful thanks to my Namesake and to Monika,Ansh for bestowing upon me this wonderful award. Thank you both, I am overwhelmed! You two are wonderful friends, I cherish your presence in my life and I hope you both know that.
"This award is given to a blog that invests and believes in PROXIMITY - nearness in space, time and relationships! These blogs are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in prizes or self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers! Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award."
Right, and my pick of eight Sia, Wordjunkie, Pseudo Intellectual, Of This and That, Mystic Margarita, Itching to Write, Karma Calling and my dear Noon.
I hope I've sent you some festive cheer, so 'deck the blogs with words and awards, fa-la-la-la-la...' and pay it forward!
